Beyond just knowing what your personal property
is worth, it's equally important to keep track of what you own.
Recovering from a major loss to your home and other property is
confusing and disorienting. It's a very poor time to expect that
you can accurately remember the existence of property and its
value. Therefore, it's very important to keep a record of your
belongings. We invite you to print out the simple list below.
Once you print it:
appraisals
original store receipts
warranty records
photographs of property
videotape of property.
This information helps you to remember what you own, have an idea
of its value and helps your insurer to properly document the value
of any property lost in a fire, theft or other source of loss
that's covered by your insurance. It also makes sense to keep
a copy of any documentation (inventory, photos or tapes) at the
home of a friend or relative. Remember, the more detail the better
the chance that you'll be properly covered for a loss. Finally,
don't let this information become obsolete. Do a new list at least
annually to reflect changing values as well as changing possessions.
