In a recent Bangor Daily News article, officials warn of a persistent phone scam that has been costing elderly people a lot of money. The area code 876 shows up on the caller ID’s of the victims, and the caller informs them that they have won the Jamaican lottery or a new car. Then, they coerce the victim into sending a fee of up to $4,000 to process the prize.
An elderly man in New Hampshire was conned out of $85,000 before his daughter helped him realize what was going on. The callers posed as federal agents and gained his trust over months of phone calls.
A website has been developed to inform consumers of this risk, with tips such as:
Never pay to receive a prize.
Never share important numbers like your bank account numbers or social security number.
If you do not have caller ID, considering having it added to your phone service.
If you receive a suspicious call, contact your local authorities.
