Over the years, the Houlton school system’s music program

has become a standard of excellence throughout Maine.  Roughly half of the district’s middle school and high school students participate in fifteen performance ensembles in vocal and instrumental music.  In addition to hosting school performances, many community events have used the school’s auditorium as their venue of choice.  The popularity of these performances has caused the program to rapidly outgrow its space.

In 2002, MSAD #29’s Music Boosters addressed the issue by exploring the idea of expanding the facilities.  Soon, donations and fund-raising efforts took off and the Houlton Community Arts Center was formed as a non-profit organization to continue the renovation project.

In 2009, the first phase of the $5 million project was completed with the renovation of the auditorium and entry areas.  The next phase is to add 13,000 square feet of space.

The state-of-the-art facilities and marketing efforts have drawn more interest from organizations outside of the school, and with it has come the opportunity to bring in more funds for the expansion.  2013 brings a series of popular comedians, starting this Saturday at 7:00 pm.  Come on out for an evening of laughter and support arts in Houlton!
