If you’re in the Presque Isle, Maine area this evening, come check out the street fair from 5-9, kicking off this weekend’s Crown of Maine Balloon Fest.  The festival is sponsored by the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce and the Mapleton Lions Club.

Professional hot air balloon pilots will fly their balloons to The County, a popular spot for them due to the scenery, friendly people and the options for landing.  Celebrations will continue through the weekend, with a city wide yard sale, craft fair, youth day, concerts by Mellow Endeavor and Tallahassee, Color Presque Isle and ATLC 5k runs, and more.

Tethered rides will be offered on Friday and Saturday nights. 150 tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis, for $10 for ages 12 and up, and $5 for children under 12.  Longer rides will be offered by some of the pilots, $180 per person for an AM flight, and $200 per person for a PM flight.

Aroostook County has an interesting history with balloons.  In 1978, the first successful balloon trip across the Atlantic was launched from Presque Isle.  The first solo flight was launched from Caribou in 1984.

Join the fun and witness the beauty of the balloons in flight, and take a few pictures to enter in the photo contest!
