“Agriculture is our wisest pursuit,
because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good
morals, and happiness.” Thomas Jefferson in a letter to George
Washington – 1787

With rising food prices and concerns
about nutrition, more and more people are buying locally grown and
produced food. The Houlton Community Market started meeting this
need five years go, with its open air market in downtown Houlton,
Maine, every Saturday morning from Memorial Day through October.

Gerald Morey, of Windcrest Farms in
Hodgdon, is Market Master for the Houlton market. “For the first
couple of years, it set up in the park across from the jail. Three
regular vendors, Karin Morey, Chris O’Donnell and Bob Clifford,
stubbornly sat and put in the time through all kinds of weather to
get the name established,” Morey says.

The Market has since moved to the
downtown, Market Square area. In 2012, there have averaged 8-10
vendors each week. According to Morey, the vendors’ products range
from “custom jewelry made on site to bags of locally grown lettuce.
There are baked goods and crafts as well. There is even a cheese
maker there.”

Last Saturday, a local band named
Mellow Endeavor volunteered their talents and played at the Market.
Morey would like to find sponsors who would be able to keep music at
the Market every week.

The demand for local produce is greater
than the supply, so Morey would like to encourage any local gardeners
who have an abundance of produce to contact the Market about the
opportunity to sell their produce on Saturday mornings. Like the
