Millions each year flock to Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine, but many do not realize that Acadian history is richest in the northernmost part of the state. In the 1700s, French settlers populated what is now the Atlantic Canadian Provinces. During conflict with the British settlers in power during the time, they were deported to British colonies and fled to settle in safer areas. Some settled in Louisiana and developed the rich Cajun culture we know today. Others settled in the St. John Valley in Northern Maine. Today, Maine Acadian heritage flourishes and each summer is celebrated at the Madawaska Acadian Festival.
