Growing up in a large extended family, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house with my many cousins, aunts and uncles.  Today, most of us still live nearby my grandfather, who is 88 years old and living at home alone.  The family is able to check on him several times a day, which gives us all peace of mind.  However, not all elderly people have family living nearby.

The Houlton Police Department has started a new service called The Friendly Caller program.  This is a free, voluntary program for which senior Houlton residents can sign up.  Each day between 6:00 and 10:00 am, the participant calls the police department to check in.  If they do not call, the department calls the resident.  If there is no answer, a police officer visits the home to check on the resident.
